In December, 10 pupils from Trinity High School will be joining 10 from Stonelaw to visit the Carillion site in Bishopbriggs. They will be able to watch current apprentices undertaking various tasks and learning valuable skills such as manual handling and power tool training whilst completing the SQA Certificate of Work Readiness.
This Pre-foundation Apprenticeship opportunity has proved so popular with the pupils, with this most recent visit being oversubscribed, that there are already plans in place to repeat this exercise in the New Year. If your son or daughter is interested they should apply to attend through Mr McCarthy.
Initially, the pre-foundation apprenticeship is aimed at Christmas school leavers and, following the visit, the pupils will be able to apply to the course which covers the following:
Successful completion of the pre-foundation apprenticeship can lead to a Modern Apprenticeship with Carillion or one of their business partners.
Although this opportunity is currently open to Christmas leavers, our plan is to run the visit again to accommodate summer leavers too.
The Royal Bank of Scotland are currently delivering a National 5 level Skills for Work in Financial Services. This course is being delivered to S4 pupils from Trinity and Stonelaw. We are the only schools in Scotland to benefit from this opportunity.
The course involves classroom work combined with visits to an RBS branch and Glasgow City College as well as valuable work experience.
This would give the pupils the chance to achieve and award which would introduce them to the financial sector, which has been identified by Skills Development Scotland as an area of potential future employment in our area.
All the opportunities for our pupils are relevant to industries that have been highlighted by SDS as displaying significant skills gaps. We plan to extend the CoWR to incorporate more industry sectors, such as SKY, and thereby attracting more pupils. We will continue to work with employers and education establishments to bridge these gaps and to help deliver the work force of the future.
