BFI FILM ACADEMY 2020/21 Craft Skills Course

Break into Film

As part of the BFI Film Academy specialist course programme, applications are now open for our Craft Skills course for young people aged 16 to 19 across the UK.

Participants will receive advanced and intensive craft sessions focusing on screenwriting, cinematography, sound, directing and editing and take part in masterclasses with award winning film industry experts.

The Specialist course gives the opportunity to work with professional actors and use industry standard equipment to produce a short film within the 7 day residential.

Upon completion, your films will be screened online for industry guests, your friends and family, and you will be given key advice on industry entry and supported to produce a personal development plan to help you with your next steps in film.

Course Dates

The course takes place from Saturday 31st of July to Saturday 7th August 2021.

NB: The course will consist of several evening or weekend sessions from early July covering screenwriting, film watching & group development leading up to the residential course.

(If Covid 19 restrictions remain in place, the course will take place via virtual learning, with a weekend film shoot in Edinburgh for each team. We’ll engage with all course learners to set the most appropriate dates throughout July and August)

Course Fee

We welcome applications no matter your background or previous experience. The course fee is £50, with bursaries available for those who require financial aid to participate.


Any young person who has previously attended a BFI Film Academy Specialist/Residential course or is currently at University or will be at the time of the course taking place is not eligible to apply.

Modern Apprenticeships with the Scottish Government

Job overview

The recruitment of Modern Apprentices is a fair, open and merit based process (16+) and with permanence from the start of the apprenticeship. Candidates with a disability who meet the essential criteria below will be invited to the interview.

In April 2019, the First Minister recognised a ‘global climate emergency’ and following the passage of the climate change Bill, Scotland will now be required to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 with an interim reduction of 75% required by 2030 and 90% by 2040.

Decarbonising the supply of heat to all of Scotland’s buildings is one of the major challenges that will need to be addressed. The 2019 Programme for Government commits the Scottish Government to combining the action we need to take on climate change with our ambition to provide affordable, warm homes.

The Successful candidate will work across three units in the consumers and low carbon division. These units work across policy development, regulation and delivery of Scottish Government programmes which aim to help decarbonise Scotland’s Buildings. As a result of this the chosen candidate will be able to learn from different areas within the division and give them the tools to further develop there Scottish Government career.

Main Duties
• Responsibility for personal assistant support to the C2 Unit Heads of the Heat Strategy, Heat in Buildings Regulation and Energy Efficient Scotland Delivery Units, including inbox and diary management as needed. This will include using MS Outlook to manage the calendars and inboxes of the Unit Heads, management of meeting papers and One Note and operating as a professional and discrete point of contact from and to internal and external sources, and as first point of contact for the three Units.
• Responsibility for arranging key meetings and events for B and C Band Staff across the three units and providing support to the three Units with the coordination of events as required, to meet deadlines.
• Information and knowledge management for the Units, including: – Unit records management using the electronic records management system (eRDM) to store and retrieve documents and leading on information gathering exercises (email trawls, websites etc.).
• Support the budget manager and team leaders in the Energy Efficient Scotland Delivery Unit, processing payments and financial information.
• Responsibility for booking travel for C Band team leaders and Unit heads.

What will I learn?

Throughout the first 12 months the candidate will be expected to gain a relevant SVQ qualification. Support will be provided by a qualified assessor who will work with the successful candidate on a monthly basis. Time will be given to work on your qualification, this includes delivering 2 presentations.

What qualification or qualities are required?

2. Knowledgeable in the use of Microsoft office applications.
3. Good written and oral communication skills.

  • After graduation you will be able to gain the qualification of IEng with an industry professional body.
  • During your training you will be a member of South Lanarkshire Council staff.
  • The salary during training will start at £21500 with annual increments available
  • You will be paid as a full time member of staff with the same benefits as other council staff.
  • The Council will cover all course fees.

What will you learn?

The course has been developed by the university in partnership with employers to ensure it meets industry needs.  This is reinforced through significant work based learning which involves a 4 year blended study period with approximately 1/5th of your time spend at university and remainder in the workplace.  The apprenticeship will develop your civil engineering skills and experience in a number of disciplines including structures, construction materials, geotechnics and project management.

How do I apply?

There is a minimum entry requirement for candidates interested in this role.

  • SQA Highers: ABBB including Maths, Physics, Technological Studies or Engineering Science at B.
  • A Foundation Apprenticeship is accepted as equivalent to one higher as part of the overall grade profile of Highers required for entry. Any essential subjects at Higher should still be achieved in addition to the Foundation Apprenticeship

Foundation Apprenticeships are a work-based learning opportunity for senior-phase secondary school pupils. You will spend time out of school at college or with a local employer, and complete the Foundation Apprenticeship alongside your other subjects like National 5s and Highers. It’s a chance to get valuable work experience and gain an industry recognised qualification. It also lets you try out a career you are interested in while you’re still at school.

Social Mobility Business Partnership (SMBP) Work Insight and Skills Week

What: Fantastic ‘virtual’ Work Insight & Skills programme for S5/S6 students interested in a career in law, finance or business.

When:  21-25 June

Who:  S5-S6 students who meet the eligibility criteria (see attached)

Fantastic ‘virtual’ Work Insight & Skills programme for S5/S6 students interested in a career in law, finance or business.

Run by the award winning Social Mobility Business Partnership, this virtual offering will take place during 21st to 25th June 2021. Students will spend up to three hours each day meeting with different high profile organisations where they will learn about that business and get involved in business-like tasks and games. The week will also include a session learning about the psychology of resilience and goal achievement.

Students wishing to take part must:

–       Attend state school; and

–       Have achieved or is on course to achieve a minimum of BBB by end of S5, including English and Mathematics.

And, meet one or more of the following:

–       First generation to attend university; or

–       Are or have been eligible for free school meals in the last 6 years (NB FSM eligibility criteria includes benefits measure and pupil premium links back to FSM eligibility in the last 6 years); or

–       Has received or is eligible for an Education Maintenance Allowance; or

–       Where the young person is, or has been a carer; or

–       If the young person is or has been in the care system; or

–       Lives in a postcode with a SIMD ranking of 1-3 (30% most deprived areas) – you can check here.
