Cyber Security

This course is designed for learners who are considering further study or a career in the Cyber Security sector. This qualification allows clear progression and development routes to both higher level education and employment.

In Cyber Security, candidates develop knowledge, understanding and practical problem-solving skills in three key units, including Data Security, Digital Forensics and Ethical Hacking. The same skills are taught at all three different levels, with tasks becoming progressively harder as the levels increase:

  • Data Security: where policies, practices and procedures within current, corporate data security businesses will be explored. Ethical, legal and professional standards will be taken into account to help learners develop decision making regarding policies and practices within Data Security.
  • Learners will also develop good knowledge, understanding and practical problem-solving skills to implement within Digital Forensics. Within this topic, investigation skills into identifying and securing digital evidence will be developed to then analyse, reconstruct and interpret the data. We will then explore how this evidence can be reported and used within an investigation into cyber-crime.
  • Lastly, candidates develop knowledge, understanding and practical problem-solving skills to investigate the tools and techniques used by both ethical and criminal hackers, within the Ethical Hacking unit. Learners will explore the world of hacking by understanding potential threats and factors that are used by malicious hackers against both individuals and organisations. To counter this, learners will develop skills and techniques to help identify and mitigate these threats and use these to defend systems from attack within practical and theoretical tasks.

Successful completion of this course at level 6 provides pupils with several pathways at both colleges and universities within Scotland to complete HNC/D’s and BSc’s in further education, or enter modern apprenticeships in related practices. There is a skills gap within this field in Scotland and this provides a great opportunity to ensure you are part of the cyber revolution!
