School Transport

INFORMATION FROM SOUTH LANARKSHIRE COUNCIL

Dear parent/carer

Following the change to the secondary school transport policy, which is being implemented from August 2025, we are writing to you in order to provide information which may be helpful when considering alternative methods for your child(ren) to get to school, where they no longer qualify under distance criteria for school transport.

Each of our secondary schools is currently updating and developing their school travel plan.  Part of this process will be to consult with pupils and parents about how you currently get to school and to develop school travel options for families. Your child’s school will contact you separately regarding this.

The under 22 bus pass is available for all those aged 5-21 years who live in Scotland and can be used on the public transport bus network to travel to and from school.  If your child does not have an under 22 bus pass, please speak to your school for information on how to apply, or visit getyournec.scot to apply.

We continue to discuss options with bus operators to maximise available capacity on buses and to explore options for additional routes. We will issue further updates before the end of the summer term on these discussions when the operators provide confirmation on what they are able to offer.

In addition, we are liaising with other council resources to prepare a programme of works to address issues that have been raised by parents for example, lighting issues and the clearing of overgrown trees/bushes etc. These works will be completed before the start of the August term.

A helpful resource for planning journeys is Traveline.  This website will provide information on available bus routes and times in your area. You can access this resource via Plan Your Journey | Traveline or by downloading the Traveline app.

For the vast majority of pupils, a public transport option will be available. By accessing public transport, pupils can reduce the travel time to school and the distance that requires to be walked.

We have included in this letter some examples of public transport options available at this time for your information and consideration when planning the journey to your catchment school.

I would hope to reassure you of our commitment to exploring and identifying all available options in relation to travel to and from our secondary schools and will continue to work to keep you updated in relation to the options available for each school through the information generated through the travel planning process.
