Spanish

All pupils in Trinity study Spanish in the Broad General Education. At the end of S2, pupils have the choice to;

  • study Spanish with view to gaining a National Qualification award.
  • study a language (Spanish, French or Portuguese) in one of our Academy courses. 

National 4

National 4 Spanish develops literacy skills by giving learners opportunities to read, write, listen and talk in Spanish and to reflect on how this relates to English and to apply their knowledge of a modern language in the real life contexts of society, learning, employability and culture. 

Students are assessed on using straightforward language (talking and writing) and understanding straightforward language (listening and reading).    

National 5

National 5 Spanish develops literacy skills by giving learners opportunities to read, write, listen and talk in Spanish and to reflect on how this relates to English and to apply their knowledge of a modern language in the real life contexts of society, learning, employability and culture. 

Students are assessed in the four skill areas of reading, writing, listening and talking, each component equally weighted at 25% each. 

Higher Spanish

Higher Spanish further develops reading, writing, listening and talking skills in Spanish, and introduces the skill area of translation. Pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of detailed and complex Spanish in the contexts of society, learning, employability, and culture. Pupils encounter a wide range of texts in different media as well as film. In addition, the course provides knowledge about the way of life and customs of Spain and Latin America.

Students are assessed in the skill areas of reading and translation, writing, listening and talking, each component equally weighted at 25% each. 

Advanced Higher Spanish

Advanced Higher Spanish further develops the key skills of reading and translation, listening, talking and writing. Pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of very detailed and complex Spanish through the contexts of society, learning, employability, and culture. Critical thinking skills are developed when analysing current events for the discursive writing element of the course, as well as through the study of Spanish and Latin American literature and film. 

Candidates will study a variety of topics such as;

  • Gender equality,
  • Immigration and multiculturalism,
  • Environment, 
  • Family structure,
  • Lifelong learning.
