SLC Graduate Level Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering

SLC

It’s a ‘No Brainer’

South Lanarkshire Council are offering a fantastic opportunity to pupils interested in studying for a degree in Civil Engineering whilst earning an amazing wage and having all course costs taken care of. Why study through 4-5 years of university incurring all the debt of student loans when you can be paid to study and walk out with the same degree – debt free?

Working within the South Lanarkshire Council’s Roads and Transportation Service Department pupils will combine working experience with day release to university on this Graduate Apprenticeship opportunity.

But what is Civil Engineering?

Civil Engineering is everything you see that’s been built around us.

It’s about roads and railways, schools, offices, hospitals, water and power supply and much more.  The kind of things we take for granted but would find life very hard to live without.

A career in South Lanarkshire Council’s Roads and Transportation Services offers an interesting and varied choice comprising a number of professional engineering disciplines such as;

  • roads design
  • network and asset maintenance and management
  • traffic and transportation
  • contracting operations
  • structural engineering/bridges
  • flood risk management
  • development management

As a civil engineer, your work influences where people work, relax, learn and live.  There will always be a demand for civil engineers and a career with South Lanarkshire Council offers excellent conditions,  good working environment and job satisfaction.  The council is also committed to Continuous Professional Development to provide a platform for career progression.

What is the Graduate Apprenticeship in Civil  Engineering?

The Graduate Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering develops skills and experience to produce multi-disciplinary graduates.  You will study at Glasgow Caledonian University to gain a BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering (Environmental Civil Engineering) and after graduation you will continue working with Roads and Transportation and progress towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with a professional institution. During your training you will be a member of South Lanarkshire Council staff.  The salary during training will start at £20,876 with annual increments available and you will be paid as a full time member of staff with the same benefits as other council staff. The Council will cover all course fees.

What will you learn?

The course has been developed by the university in partnership with employers to ensure it meets industry needs.  This is reinforced through significant work based learning which involves a 4 year blended study period with approximately 1/5th of your time spend at university and remainder in the workplace.  The apprenticeship will develop your civil engineering skills and experience in a number of disciplines including structures, construction materials, geotechnics and project management.

How do I apply?

There is a minimum entry requirement for candidates interested in this role.

  • 4 SQA Highers (ABBB) –
  • Maths (Essential)
  • Physics, Technological Studies or Engineering Studies (One of these)
  • 2 other Highers (one of which could be an Engineering based Foundation Apprenticeship).

1 of the Highers above should be at A grade.
